Item Description

Wine Advocate 92
From their vineyards in Retuerta de Bullaque, Toledo, comes the 2011 Vallegarcía Syrah from seven hectares of the Rhône variety pruned in the Smart-Dyson way, which fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrel for one year. There is a strong smell of boiled ham (lacón, look it up or order it next time you're in Spain), smoky bacon, with roasted notes and well-integrated oak. The palate is juicy and meaty (pun intended) reminiscent of the Northern Rhône, with powerful flavors, very tasty, umami-driven and supple. This is a very good Syrah, with its own personality and a very good value at that.

Definitely Hammy

"The WA review of this is spot on in terms of flavor. My wife and I really enjoy Syrah/Shiraz and enjoy the bolder Spanish wines so I thought this would be a sure thing however we found that the wine smelled so much like "boiled ham" as WA put it that we didn't enjoy much more than 3 or 4 sips as we found that every time we went to drink it we couldn't put the idea of ham out of our heads. That being said, I would recommend this wine to people who enjoy literally 'meaty' smelling wines, if that's a thing. The palate offers more depth but is hard to grasp given the overpowering nose."
