Wine Enthusiast 91
This red shows vivid plum, cherry, eucalyptus, licorice and myriad herbs, spices and flowers, underpinned by a graphite note. Theres power to the palate but a lovely freshness and well-placed tug of gravelly, peppery tannins. Its an excellent weeknight wine with barbecue.~C.P.
Inspired by the great producers of Bordeaux, and with a vision to craft wines that rival the best in the world, the Taylor family traveled across the best wine regions of Australia to find the perfect plot of land on which to establish their family estate. On July 20, 1969, their quest brought them to a site by the Wakefield River in South Australia's Clare Valley. And on the same day that Neil Armstrong took man's first steps onto the moon, Bill Taylor took his first steps on the soil that would eventually become the family estate.
The Clare Valley's winemaking history spans more than 150 years, making it one of Australia's oldest wine-producing regions. It has also been described as one of the prettiest in Australia with rolling hills and sweeping gullies. The unique combination of geography, geology and climate results in terroir that is perfect for producing world-class wine. The Clare Valley has some of the world's oldest and varied soils, dating 640m+ years old. There are 11 different soil types but the predominate is Terra Rossa (red loam over limestone).
Wakefield has proudly remained family-owned and operated since its founding. Today, the third generation, led by Mitchell, Justin and Clinton, are actively involved in the day-to-day operations. Strong family's values shape every aspect of the business, from their sustainable land management practices to how the Taylor's engage with and define the leadership of the Australian wine industry.
Launched in 1998, the Promised Land range pays homage to the discovery of fossilized seahorses on the family's estate, and the promise of its rich fertile soils. The wines are designed to be full of robust flavor accessible to any wine lover. The fruit is sourced from premium South Australian regions but is still typically Taylor's: award winning quality, smooth, easy drinking and amazing value. For its 20th anniversary, this iconic range received a contemporary and striking new design, painted by Australian artist Catherine Abel.
