Wine Advocate 93
"A beautiful Bordeaux blend, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series checks in as a blend of 100% Cabernet, from a number of vineyards (mostly Woodward Canyon, Champoux and Spring Creek), that spent 21 months in 50% new French oak. It’s a classy, full-bodied, seamless and sexy 2012 that exhibits lots of black cherry, black raspberry, toasted spices, licorice and dried herbs. The most approachable and forward of the Bordeaux blends, it will still have two decades of longevity."

Vinous Media 92
"Bright medium red-ruby. Initially brooding aromas of cassis, licorice, minerals, cocoa powder, menthol and mocha opened quickly with air. Densely packed, sweet and glossy, with a pliant texture and showy flavors of black cherry, cassis, menthol, flowers and sexy oak. This deep, tactile cabernet shows excellent depth and a long, lightly saline finish featuring ripe, chewy, building tannins. This should age well but it’s also delicious now with some time in a decanter. -- Stephen Tanzer"

Wine Spectator 90
"Open-textured and inviting, with a pop of dark berry and sassafras flavors on a supple frame, finishing with firm tannins. This one sneaks up on you. Drink now through 2017."

Great Northwest Wine - outstanding
Year after year, Kevin Mott produces one of the Northwest’s top examples of Cabernet Sauvignon for Rick Small, and his latest vintage doesn’t miss a step. Eight vineyards, including Champoux, Discovery, Sagemoor and the Woodward Canyon Estate make up this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (76%), Merlot (11%), Cabernet Franc (5%), Petit Verdot (4%) and Syrah. The nose creates hints of black cherry, chocolate and black pepper, and there’s a match on the palate. Fine-grained tannins, blueberry acidity and black tea combine to give it a remarkable structure that’s superb now, but should also age for more than a decade. This ranked as perhaps the most expressive Cabernet Sauvignon of the 2014 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition and merited its gold medal.

This new vintage, combined with bits of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Syrah, displays a deep, brilliant ruby color and enticing aromas of wild blackberries, cherries, cassis, crushed roses, mulberries, juniper berries, cigar box, olive, thyme and sage. On the palate, the flavors are replete with dark fruits, black licorice, bittersweet chocolate and earthy minerals, all wrapped around a deep core. The back reveals squeezed berries, roasted nuts, kirsch liqueur, crème de cassis. The finish is long and lavish (a trait of the ’12 vintage), yet focused, with bright fruit acids that are integrated with toasty oak and ripe tannins.

' The 2012 vintage was substantially larger than the winter damaged 2011 vintage and the quality was exceptional. We achieved beautifully mature fruit through shoot thinning, leaf stripping and improved viticultural practices. It is rare to see production numbers this large and still see wine quality so high.

All grapes were harvested by hand, sorted and de-stemmed. This Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented in small stainless steel tanks and was punched down or pumped over twice a day. Aging in French Chateaux barrels has produced a well proportioned, complex and generous red wine. We have consciously chosen to use slightly less new French oak as these vineyards have gotten older; thus allowing the wine to express varietal typicity and a very distinct sense of place.

This “Artist Series” Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from many of the finest and most highly regarded vineyards in Washington State. Each produces fantastic wine in their own right; when blended they produce extraordinary wine.

This enticing and deeply colored red wine shows a complex nose of baking spice, black olive and graham integrated beautifully with aromas of ripe black cherry. In the mouth the wine is rich and elegant, showing classic notes of pepper, herb and berries. Integrated tannins enhance the texture and give proportion; the finish is complex, generous, and long. While this wine can be enjoyed now it will benefit greatly from additional cellaring and, with proper storage, should develop for ten years.

Varietal Composition:
76% cabernet sauvignon
11% merlot
5% cabernet franc
4% peitit verdot
4% syrah

Champoux Vineyard (30%), Canoe Ridge Vineyard (29%), Sagemoor Vineyard (18%), Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (12%), Hedges (6%), Andrews (2%), Spring Creek (1%), Weinbau (1%), and Mirage (1%)

About the Artist and the label:
2012 Artist Series #21, “Sleeping Beauty “, oil and charcoal on canvas, 48” x 36”, Katherine Ace, Portland OR. Katherine Ace was born in Chicago in 1953 and received a BA from Knox College, Illinois, in 1975. She works in alkyd/oil on canvas. Between 1974 and 1990 she lived on three US coasts, in two mountain ranges, in remote rural rentals, in major cities and never in one place for long. Her continuing eclectic education consisted of pursuing a smorgasbord of work: a street portrait artist in New Orleans, a potter in Vermont, commissioned copyist, corporate portraitist, advertising/ magazine/ book and textbook artist. In January 1990 Ace moved to Oregon and established a permanent studio. She has had 32 solo shows since 1992. She is interested in complex story telling using cultural myths and histories that reach back into our collective and personal pasts. Figures and still life figures evolve an open ended metaphors for concepts and environments that are themselves also metaphors, and therefore fold - like fabric, time, or paint - back in on themselves. Like a poem, a painting is a surface. The depth is in the surface (oddly). It sort of dawns on you - like the way one remembers a dream sometimes, in fragments that float up all through the day, assembling themselves oddly, disturbingly... " ~ Winery notes
