Elvio Cogno Winery

The Elvio Cogno Winery produces the principle wines of the Langhe. The winery owns about fifteen hectares of vineyard property in Novello, one of eleven townships in the province of Cuneo in which Barolo DOCG production is allowed. The hills are world-renowned for their history, culture, and beauty, and they were recently recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage.

In the footsteps of its founder Elvio Cogno, today Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore direct the winery with four generations of winemakers and vine growers, dedicated to obtaining excellence that begins with the unique terroir to create wines that are famous throughout the world for their elegance, texture, and balance.

"You can make wine simply by buying the grapes for it. To work in the vineyards is another thing entirely. It means feeling a connection with the earth and its vital cycles of nature. Overall, it means transmitting the sense of this to your work." Valter Fissore

With four Barolo labels and eleven and a half hectares of vineyards in Ravera, Cogno is the most important producer of the Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva (MeGA) "Ravera." Ravera is the most well-known cru, or zone of vineyards, of Novello. It is recognized for producing wines that are able to withstand time while maintaining their aromas and freshness intact.

Strength, elegance, and noble smoothness. Elvio Cogno produces the great wines of the Langhe following traditional winemaking methods formed with the test of time. The wines are made according to the time scale of nature so that the extraordinary terroir of the vineyards is free to express its unique character, aroma, and color.

The winemaking methods use long, spontaneous fermentation, slow and never exaggerated extraction, a prudent use of submerged cap, large barrels, and the silence -- mysterious and full of anticipation -- of aging.

The wines of Elvio Cogno use technology sparingly, and only in support of the natural evolution of the wine, so that in every nuance, it carries the signature of the great cru of the family: Ravera.

The wines of Elvio Cogno draw their distinctive characteristics from this zone located in the township of Novello. The area has always been considered the best of its surrounding territory, and gives Elvio Cogno wines their uniqueness that, over time, has become a mark of distinction, their identifying character, and a symbol of the wisdom handed down over the generations.

Through the natural vineyard management and cellar methods, the wines reveal an elegant and graceful power, an enveloping smoothness, and an unexpected freshness accompanied by characteristic and pronounced aromas. The wines are ready to tell a new story every time, yet remain constant in their pride of their roots.

Wine Advocate 90 "The 2010 Dolcetto dAlba Vigna del Mandorlo is a big, dark wine bursting with fruit. This is an especially brooding, virile Dolcetto that needs to be paired with food. Violets, tar and scorched earth are some of the notes that add complexity to the blueberry and blackberry fruit.

Robert Parker 91 "The 2004 Barolo Ravera is another beautiful effort. Ravera is a vineyard that typically yields wines with a firm tannic spine, yet this Barolo has plenty of fruit to provide an engaging counterpoint. Dark cherries, plums, tar and smoke all come to life as this elegant,

Wine Advocate 89 "Cogno's 2007 Dolcetto d'Alba is made in a firm, sturdy style yet it offers compelling balance in its fresh bouquet and ripe dark fruit. The wine possesses a long, clean finish, not to mention terrific balance. This reliably excellent Dolcetto also happens to be a great value.

Robert Parker 92 "Cogno’s Barolo Ravera is a wine that sometimes comes across as austere, but in 2003 the heat has filled out the wine’s frame nicely, giving it an attractive plumpness and soft, accessible personality. Today it is primary, with just the barest hints of macerated cherries and
