The love of wine has been in our family for more than a century in the blood: since 1868 is the now 28 hectares of vineyard vineyard in our possession. We are located in the old wine-growing community of Hollenburg, a district of Krems / Donau, which belongs to the Kremstal wine-growing region. Here was already 400 n. Chr. Viticulture, the time of St. Severin, confirmed to be involved.
Quality grows in the vineyards. Optimal care of the soil and the vineyards is the basic prerequisite to wrestle great wines. Through careful treatment and through a few interventions in the cellar, the quality given by nature is preserved.
"I make the wines for myself, but I can sell only the wines that I like."
The majority of our vines grow in south-east oriented terraced vineyards on so-called "Hollenburger conglomerate". These soils with different thicknesses of loess, in combination with the special microclimate, produce uniquely fruity and spicy peppery mountain wines
Soil: calcareous conglomerate and weathering soils.
Climate: Rather hot climate. The vineyards are sheltered by a narrow forest trail from the west winds.
Special: 1318 first documentary mention as a wine warrant. Average slope over 26% south and southeast. The name Schiefer does not come from Schiefergestein, but is derived from Schiffberg. From here, the Danube boatmen were using flags and fire on any dangers of the then 3-arm Danube or warned of ship looters. On a wine map from 1821 the "Rieger" is called "In Schifern". The vineyard is planted with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
